Life’s a beach!
We are so lucky in Scotland (wait for it) to have some of the worlds most beautiful scenery. However, it’s just like a nice house and we all must do our bit to keep it tidy. As we’ve mentioned quite a few times in our website (See our Nurdles article) that plastic and nurdles make its way into the sea and washes up on beaches.
We took to Portobello beach to see just how big the problem is. The weather wasn’t glamourous, but it wasn’t a day for buckets and spades, rather a day for investigating how big Scotland’s plastic problem really is.
When we got to the beach, we had a rough idea of what we were looking for it was only a matter of seconds before the clean-up began. Water bottles and straws can be seen at the sea front amongst other pieces of plastic. It’s a sad site to see and even sadder when you begin to see the nurdles. We must have been collecting for an hour and couldn’t believe how much we found.

We took our findings to ‘The Great Nurdle Hunt’ which is an online platform in which you can record your findings, they are a fantastic organisation set up to raise awareness in keeping our seas and beaches plastic free. They also offer a guide which is highly helpful for if you are going to start nurdle hunting and offer you the best hints on how to hunt.
We at Planet Plastic seriously recommend that if you have a spare day during the week or even if the schools are off and the kids are bored to take them to a beach and do your bit in keeping Scotland beautiful. We are only on the planet for a short time, it’s up to us to pave the way for future generations.
